FAQ – Ioannina Summer School on Elementary Particles & Data Analysis

1. What is the topic of the Summer School?

The Summer School will focus on Elementary Particle Physics and Data Analysis in modern experimental physics. The main part of the program will cover the experimental approach and data processing, while introductory theoretical lectures will also take place so that participants can acquire the necessary theoretical background.

2. Will there be speeches or regular classes?

The program will mainly consist of regular classes and educational activities, rather than just isolated talks. The goal of the Summer School is to provide a substantial educational experience and encourage the active participation of the attendees.

3. When will the Summer School take place and what will be its duration?

The Summer School is scheduled to start around the second week of July. Its total duration is expected to be 7 days.

4. When will I know if my application was accepted?

5. How will the participants be selected?

The selection of participants will be based on criteria set by the organizing committee, such as:

  • Academic background
  • Year of study

The Summer School is primarily aimed at students in their 3rd year of study and above, who will also have priority during the selection process due to the level and subject matter of the courses.
Because of the limited number of available spots, it is not possible to accept all applications.

6. Do I have to be a Physics student to participate?

Not necessarily. The Summer School is mainly aimed at students with an interest in Physics and the STEM fields in general.
Applications from students in other related departments may also be accepted, depending on their academic background and the selection criteria.

7. Can students who have only completed their 2nd year of study participate?

Yes, they can submit an application. However, they may not have priority compared to students in their later years of study, according to the application evaluation criteria.

8. What can I study before the Summer School so that I can better follow the classes?

A basic familiarity with the following is recommended:

  • Quantum Mechanics
  • Special Theory of Relativity
  • Basic concepts of Particle Physics and the Standard Model
  • Basic programming skills in C/C++ and familiarity with the ROOT software

9. Will there be exams, presentations, or other activities?

The program will include workshops with practical exercises, presentations, or group activities related to data analysis and particle physics. Finally, participants will work on a final project which will be presented on the last day of the Summer School as part of the closing ceremony.

10. Will I receive a certificate of participation?

Yes, a certificate of participation will be provided to attendees who successfully attend 80% of the program’s lectures and complete the final project.
